Is Heated Tobacco a Cigarette? Sticks vs Cigarettes vs Vape
Heated tobacco is neither a cigarette nor a vape: a plain technical breakdown of what burns, what is heated and what vaporises, and why TEREA and BLENDS get mistaken for cigarettes.
Is Heated Tobacco a Cigarette? Sticks vs Cigarettes vs Vape
Three products people constantly mix up, and three different mechanisms: one burns, one is heated, one vaporises a liquid.
Short answer: are TEREA and BLENDS sticks cigarettes?
No. TEREA and BLENDS sticks are neither cigarettes nor vapes. A cigarette burns with a flame and leaves ash and a butt. A stick is real tobacco heated inside an IQOS device without combustion, so no ash is produced. A vape contains no tobacco leaf at all; it vaporises a flavoured liquid. Three mechanisms, three separate products.
The confusion is documented, not assumed: searchers in Kuwait type “terea cigarettes” and “blends cigarettes”, phrasing that already treats the product as a cigarette. This page answers on technical grounds alone.
This comparison is strictly technical: how each product works, how it is used and what it leaves behind. It makes no comparison of health effects and does not rank any of the three systems above another. All three are tobacco and nicotine products intended for adults, and health questions belong to the competent authorities.
The three systems side by side
| Point | Cigarette | Heated tobacco (sticks) | Vape |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is inside | Cut tobacco wrapped in paper | Real compressed tobacco in a short stick | Flavoured liquid — no tobacco leaf |
| What happens in use | Combustion, open flame | Tobacco heated without combustion | Liquid vaporised by a heating element |
| Heat source | Lighter or external flame | Device with a heating chamber | Battery-powered device |
| Residue | Ash and a butt | No ash — the used stick is discarded | No ash |
| Smell | Combustion smoke | Less odour emission than conventional cigarettes | No tobacco smoke |
| Unit of use | One burning cigarette | One stick per session | Many sessions from one liquid |
| Packaging | Pack and carton | 20 sticks per pack · 10 packs · 200 sticks | Liquid bottles |
The cigarette: combustion
Mechanically the cigarette is the simplest: paper wrapped around cut tobacco, lit by an external flame. From that moment the tobacco is in continuous combustion, the tip consuming tobacco and paper alike, and the smoke is the direct product of that combustion.
- It sustains itself. A cigarette keeps burning in an ashtray with no input from the user.
- It leaves residue. Ash accumulates and a butt remains at the end.
- The heat is uncontrolled. An open flame is subject to no electronic regulation and varies with airflow.
Heated tobacco: heat, not burn
Here the tobacco is genuinely there — real tobacco, not a substitute — but it is never lit. A stick is a short unit of compressed tobacco inserted into an electronic device that heats it enough to release taste and smoke without reaching combustion: no flame, no ash, no burning butt, and less odour emission than conventional cigarettes.
Nothing keeps burning on its own either: the device heats for the session then stops, and one stick serves one session before being discarded. Two systems are sold in Kuwait, and each has its own sticks.
ILUMA with TEREA sticks
TEREA are SMARTCORE STICKS and work exclusively with IQOS ILUMA devices using SMARTCORE INDUCTION — induction heating instead of the blade used in IQOS ORIGINALS. Compatible devices: ILUMA, ILUMA PRIME, ILUMA ONE, ILUMA i, ILUMA i PRIME and ILUMA i ONE. A pack holds 20 sticks and a carton 10 packs, or 200 sticks. Full detail is in the IQOS and heated tobacco guide.
BONDS with BLENDS sticks
IQOS BONDS runs on the ROUNDHEAT TOBACCO SYSTEM™: external resistive heating around the stick with no internal blade, heating tobacco without combustion, leaving no ash and needing no routine cleaning, with a session of about 5 minutes per stick. The four BLENDS sticks are made only for BONDS and do not work in ILUMA devices — see the BLENDS sticks guide.
Vape: vaporising a liquid
Vaping is the only one of the three with no tobacco leaf at all. A battery heats an element, the element vaporises a flavoured liquid, and the vapour disperses; nothing burns and no tobacco is heated, so there is no ash and no butt.
So the difference from heated tobacco is not temperature but the material itself: real tobacco leaf on one side, liquid on the other. Consumption differs too — one stick at a time versus a bottle covering many sessions. Liquid types and flavour families are covered in the vape flavour guide.
Why people confuse them
The confusion has clear causes:
- Appearance. A stick resembles a short cigarette and is held much the same way, so the eye judges before anyone asks about the mechanism.
- The name. In Kuwaiti usage the everyday word for a cigarette is now also the word for a heated tobacco stick, so one name covers two products.
- Variant names. TEREA and BLENDS use names such as Silver, Gold and Beige, which echo familiar cigarette branding.
- Translation. “Sticks” is sometimes translated loosely, which is how phrasings such as “terea cigarettes” reach search engines.
Terminology: stick, cigarette, puff
Much of the confusion is purely linguistic. This is how the terms are used in our catalogue:
| Term | Meaning | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Cigarette | Tobacco rolled in paper, lit and burned | Conventional cigarettes |
| Stick | A short unit of compressed tobacco inserted into a heating device | Heated tobacco |
| Session | One complete use, from the start of heating to its end | Heated tobacco |
| Puff | A vaping term, also used as a product category name | Vape only |
| Carton | The box holding 10 packs, or 200 sticks | Heated tobacco and cigarettes |
Terminology here is not a matter of taste; it identifies the product. A stick is used for one session, and the device has a heating chamber, not a liquid reservoir.
How each is treated in Kuwait
In regulatory terms the three sit inside broadly the same framework, but customs instructions No. 14 of 2025 treat them as separate items, each with its own traveller allowance:
| Item | Traveller allowance |
|---|---|
| Tobacco heating device | One device |
| Electronic shisha device | One device |
| Tobacco | 250 grams |
| Cigarettes | 400 cigarettes |
| Flavours | 60 ml |
A tobacco heating device is listed separately from an electronic shisha device, so the distinction is recognised in the text itself. Ministry of Commerce and Industry decision No. 27 of 2026 then treats all three alike: tobacco and its derivatives and cigarettes of all kinds, including electronic ones, plus devices and accessories, may not be sold through delivery platforms or any similar digital means. Ministry of Health decision No. 237 of 2026 adds an age limit of 21, product registration, packaging restrictions and an advertising ban from 1 January 2027 — the full breakdown is in the Kuwait regulations guide.
The above is a simplified summary of publicly available material and is not legal advice. The official texts issued by the competent authorities are the only reference, and details and dates may change.
FAQ
Are TEREA sticks cigarettes?
No. TEREA are units of real compressed tobacco heated inside an IQOS ILUMA device without combustion; they are never lit and produce no ash. A cigarette burns with an external flame.
Are BLENDS sticks cigarettes?
No. BLENDS are used in IQOS BONDS with the ROUNDHEAT TOBACCO SYSTEM™, heating tobacco externally without combustion and without ash. The word “sticks” is simply mistranslated as “cigarettes”.
Is IQOS a vape?
No. IQOS heats real tobacco, while a vape vaporises a liquid that contains no tobacco leaf. Different material, different mechanism.
Does heated tobacco leave ash?
No. The tobacco is heated rather than burned, so there is no ash and no smouldering butt; the used stick is removed and discarded.
Can I use TEREA sticks in a BONDS device?
No. TEREA works only with IQOS ILUMA devices using SMARTCORE INDUCTION, and BLENDS only with IQOS BONDS. The two are not interchangeable.
Can a normal cigarette be used in an IQOS device?
No. The device is built around its own stick and the way that stick is heated, while a cigarette is made to be lit with a flame.
Do you compare them on health grounds?
No. We make no health comparison between the three and rank none above another. This page is technical only: what burns, what is heated and what vaporises. Health questions belong to the competent authorities.
